Eric Choong is a Malaysian fashion designer with Eric Choong Haute Couture as a complete fashion philosophy proving him as an outstanding fashion designer ever. His latest collection Eric Choong at Fashion Pakistan Week 2010 day 3 presented his passion for fashion on Pakistani ramp that was typically lavish with tremendous tailoring details.
Eric discovered a fascination for clothes and designs while flipping through his mother’s imported magazines from Hong Kong and Japan. At the age of seven he produced his own sketches and by 13 years age he was a sort of designer among his school teachers who wanted him to design outfits for them. But still he did not considered fashion as a profession. His mother was yet there to allow his son a profession of his choice as he had the talent for that. Against the wishes of Eric’s father his mother supported him to study fashion designing in Hong Kong. His mother was his cheer leader, mentor, muse and inspiration after all.
Eric Choong coached his design and tailoring chops in Hong Kong after doing graduation from the Hong Kong Institute of Fashion Design in 1986. Before returning to Kuala Lumpur he started Eric Choong Haute Couture label in 1990 with his personal designing aesthetic and style that solely influenced his personality and skills. He also combined Malaysian culture into his distinctive designs.
Eric Choong Haute Couture, Eric Choong Prêt-à-Porter, Eric Choong Brides and Eric Choong Corporate Designs are his perennial hits. Eric Choong Brides was influenced from fairy tale wedding gowns and his Prêt-à-Porter and Corporate Designs labels were presented as best collections.
Eric also received numerous awards to his credit. He was nominated by Malaysian Tourism Board as one of Malaysia’s Top 10 Designers for three years running (1990-1992). From 1997 onwards, he was regularly invited to represent the country in fashion shows such as the ASEAN Designers’ Fashion Show (1997), Asia Pacific Young Designers’ Show (1998), Asia Pacific Bridal Summit (2001) and Show of Asian Cultural Garments (Asia Annual Conference of Cultural Exchange, 2003), to name just a few. Over the years, he has actively engaged in fashion platforms and events involving China and batik.
Eric also collaborated with leading luxury brands and media titles such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Moet & Chandon, Malaysian Tatler & the Star (Malaysia). In 2006, he picked up the Best Costume Designer award at the 19th Malaysian Film Festival for his work in the film 3rd Generation. The following year, he was named Designer of the Year at the Malaysian International Fashion Week 2007. Eric Choong Kuala Lumpur also won the Best Collection Showcase of the Year.
